Educational subsidy and educational check

The educational subsidy is a federal support program for employees who would like to continue their education. With a subsidy voucher for this educational subsidy, the state takes over half of the costs for further education and exams – up to € 500. Beginning on 1 July 2014, altered support regulations apply. The most important changes are: those who are interested in further education must be over 25 years of age and the intended further education program cannot cost more than € 1000 (relevant is the cost of the event on the invoice). Unchanged is the prerequisite that the person must work at least 15 hours per week and have a taxable income no higher than € 20,000 (in a partnership, € 40,000). In North Rhine-Westfalia, the “educational check” program also exists. It has similar prerequisites for support, but it offers up to 2000 € – explicitly also for employees in parental leave and entrepeneurs in their first five years. The educational check is a very interesting option for NRW dancers who are entering a self-employed status. They can thus finance a further education in addition to their start in self-employment. An educational check also exists in Brandenburg. You can apply for an educational check for further education programs that cost at least 715 €. Your own share must be at least 30%.

In Rhineland-Palatinate there is also a qualifications check for further education for employees; the criteria are almost the same as those for the educational subsidy. More information at: esf.rlp.de/qualischeck/

The Royal Ballet School is also preparing for a life after dance

This year at the end of May, the Royal Ballet School announced that it will include the subject of “transitions” in its standard school curriculum for full-day students; this is occurring in cooperation with the DCD (Dancers’ Career Development).
Dancers’ Career Development will work with students in the final three years of study at The Royal Ballet School (ages 16 to 19). They will be given an Introduction to Transition in Year One and in Year Two, students will participate in visits to Dancers’ Career Development beneficiaries working in diverse careers. They will have the opportunity to meet and network with current and former professional dancers, including some of Dancers’ Career Development’s 1,800 beneficiaries. In the Graduate Year, students will learn about the practicalities of Transition and the Transition Support Services provided by Dancers’ Career Development.
Christopher Powney, Artistic Director Designate, The Royal Ballet School, said: ‘This exciting new partnership will be particularly valuable in giving students a forum to think more broadly about a future beyond their careers as dancers.
‘Dancers’ Career Development will give them the support they need to understand how the life skills they learn during their training will one day serve them in other disciplines.’
This unprecedented initiative will support dance students at a key time in their personal development. Students will be encouraged to consider a wider view of the world around them and to recognise the transferable skills they have developed through their training with us.

Career information: intercultural communication

Professional dancers usually live for many years in an international context and learn a great deal about other cultures. This internationality, for years a strong element in the dance field, is also reaching other work areas in our globalized world, and it brings on new challenges that are examined more closely in the liberal arts discipline “intercultural communication”. Most study programs in this field are a part of cultural studies, and are offered as a two-year MA study program. Dancers with a BA in dance can sometimes apply directly (i.e., at the Viadrina University in Frankfurt/Oder); other universities may have a different policy and should be asked before applying. The fields in which one can work include research, human resources (personnel) or training/coaching with international workforces.

MA Socio-cultural Studies, Viadrina-Universität Frankfurt/ Oder
The MA Socio-cultural Studies (MASS) offers a two-year MA program at the interface between social studies and cultural studies.

MA intercultural communication at the LMU München
In many areas – let them be the personal space, social networks or in international relations – problems can arise with cultural difference. The question of how these problems can be solved is one of today’s great challenges.

MA intercultural communication at the University of Hildesheim
International communication is examined from the perspectives of applied linguistics and comparative cultural studies.

MA intercultural communication and education at the University of Cologne
The study program is based on four subjects: culture, education, language and communication, individuals and society. For careers, the MA offers, in addition to academic qualifications, a high degree of intercultural sensitivity and competency for different careers in the areas of education, social work, language and culture. The MA program allows for options: an emphasis on ethnological/social studies as well as the possibility for a focus in the fields of linguistics and language education for bilinguals or multi-linguals.

The 10th Transition – Stiftung TANZ workshop took place in June

A Stiftung TANZ – Transition Center Germany transition workshop took place in Frankfurt/Main on June 30th; it was the tenth since its founding in four years. Nine workshops focused on developing visions. In this format, dancers who don’t have a new career idea can develop one on an individual basis. The tenth workshop offered a new title: “Wie pack ich’s an?” (Where do I start?). It was directed at dancers who have questions about an idea they have already developed. In a group format, a total of 75 dancers from throughout Germany developed and planned their next steps for a career re-orientation after their active dance career. The participants gave very positive feedback to the workshop directors Katrin Kolo and Heike Scharpff, and they felt they were well supported. A majority of dancers will remain in contact with the Stiftung TANZ head office after the workshop, in order to continue receiving advice. The Stiftung TANZ – Transition Center Germany will continue offering three transition workshops per year for all professional dancers. Because the workshop venues change and travel costs are subsidized, all dancers can potentially take part.

Late Abitur

In order to receive an academic education, e.g., to study, the Abitur is still one of the most important prerequisites not only at German universities, but also at European institutions. The highly differentiated German school and educational system allows you to not only receive a qualification to study at a university directly after the so-called Sekundarstufe I, but also later on a second path, for example in evening classes after work. School and educational policy is in the jurisdiction of the Länder; you should thus inform yourself in the respective Länder if you want to get a diploma in this way.
