Career information: Stage and costume designer

Stage and costume designers or production designers can work in theaters (for dance, acting or operas) or at film sets. In their space and costume concepts, stage and costume designers have a large influence on the effect of pieces and choreographies. By dealing with material and space, they form a bridge between the visual and performing arts. This career is certainly exciting for dancers who can draw well and have a good knowledge of the visual arts.
In the past, stage and costume designers often entered into these careers late in life as newcomers. They often gained experience and the necessary knowledge as stage design assistants at theaters or through their own commitment. Given the high level of competition, we recommend studying. A diplom (4-5 years according to the old system), a BA (basic studies: 3 years) and MA (continued education: 2 years) programs can be found at the Universität der Künste in Berlin (BA, www.udk-berlin.de), Technischen Universität Berlin (MA as continued studies, transfer possible, but caution: relatively high fees, www.tu-buehnenbild.de), Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (diplom, www.hfbk-dresden.de), Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach (diplom, www.hfg-offenbach.de), Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (www.kunstakademie-duesseldorf.de) and Akademie für darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg (diplom, www.adk-bw.de)

Continued education abroad with a DAAD grant

The DAAD will be offering one-year grants for graduates for artistic further education in the field of the performing arts (dance, choreography, acting, directing, musical) from September 2015 until May 2016. The level of the full study grant depends on the country; the minimum, however, is set at €500 per month.
Application forms are extensive; this increases your chances, since the complicated application process discourages many applicants. The application deadline for the DAAD one-year grants 2015/2016 is October 31st 2014. Choreographers must also submit an example of their work in a video. Additional information:

Stiftung TANZ’s consultation work

In almost four years of consultations, the Stiftung TANZ – Transition Center Germany’s head office advised 550 dancers individually and free of cost about their transition. The dancers called on us in all phases of the process: long before the end of their careers in order to prepare themselves with information, shortly before the end of their dance careers in order to plan concrete steps and during their new orientation in order to receive psychological support in regular consultations. Due to the open nature of our free consultation offers, we don’t always receive feedback from the consulted dancers about the progression of their transitions. We are currently aware of 43 dancers who we advised that have successfully found a new career as well as 78 that are presently studying or are in continued education programs and 13 who are waiting for financiation of their vocational training or studies. We would be happy to receive more feedback!

Sincerely,
Sabrina Sadowska, Heike Scharpff & Andrea Thomas
