Every meeting will discuss a group theme plus time for personal concerns. Being part of a group is encouraging and supportive. The idea for this annual group comes from our French colleagues who are practising this format for many years in Paris.

„Bayrische“ lowers the minimum age for severance pay for dancers

We are happy to announce the news: The special regulation about severance pay for dancers, in place since the 1th of January 2016 and applicable for all dancers (from 1th of September 2017 for everyone who danced until 31th of August 2016) will be changed in terms of minimum age: “The board of directors of the Versorgungsanstalt der deutschen Bühnen decided to lower the age at which a dancer can apply for severance pay retroactive on 1th of January 2016 from 35 to 32.” (1)

“Dancers who have paid at least 60 months of contribution are entitled to indemnity. This implies if the dancer has given up the profession globally between the age of 32 and, at the latest, with the end of the theatrical season in which they turned 44, and is credibly able to show prove of retraining, further education or a business start-up.” (2)

IMPORTANT: This includes all work on stage, not just dancing!

Calculate your tuition fees BEFORE you start further education!

For many dancers in transition BAföG is not an option due to their `age’, even though they are still relatively young when they start their new career paths. That is why it is extremely important to realistically and far-sightedly analyse the financials if you wish to study or take up further education!

According to the Studentenwerk, you need to include, preferably in a kind of chart, the expected institutional fees individual costs. To make this clearer:

Institutional fees = tuition fees per semester, registration and administration fees if applicable and depending on the school/university and field of study any additional costs (1)

Individual costs = housing/rent including bills, compulsory insurance such as health insurance, any other insurance for example accident insurance or personal liability, travelling costs for public transport and/or your own car, variable living costs (food, clothes, toiletries, culture etc.)

At the same time, you should look at your realistic (!) income situation with following options: BAföG, other scholarships, income from work, support from family members, own savings or capital, loans, state support such as “Wohngeld”. On the basis of this, you can then draw a realistic conclusion about your income and expenses prognosis:

Is studying/further education possible with no or minimal debt? If not, can expenses be significantly cut and reduced long term? Are there any similar but cheaper options to gain qualification (also look abroad) if I can’t afford studying full time? Would a part time or weekend qualification course be a cheaper option with similar chances for later employment?

We advice you to not do the calculations by yourself but seek help from competent reliable people you trust.

The foundation DANCE also offers individual, free of charge and of course confidential counselling regarding the financial questions of transitioning: 030 326 671 41 or:info@stiftung-tanz.com.

Reduce living costs with the help of Wohngeld

We already wrote in December 2015 that the housing benefit regulation has been reformed at the beginning of this year. The increased basic rent and additional costs for heating and warm water are taken further into account. (1) After the reform, housing benefit covers up to 30% of the monthly housing costs, considerably more than before 2016.

Wohngeld can specially benefit dancers in transition who are studying or training but don’t get BAföG (notice of rejection should be presented when applying for housing benefit). They are – as long as they don’t receive ALGII – entitled to housing benefit, of course dependant on the individual income and type of housing. Further information:www.wohngeld.org/stu…

If you want to find out if you are entitled to housing benefit you can use the so-called Wohngeld-Rechner: www.wohngeld.org/woh… (Advise: you should have your contract of rent and your monthly payslip or other proof of income at hand when doing this, as they need detailed information for the calculation) IMPORTANT: The online calculation doesn’t replace an official examination and calculation by the appropriate housing benefit authority, it is only a guideline.

The processing of the multiple page housing allowance form varies from community to community, but it takes at least four weeks. The entitlement, meaning the monthly housing benefit payed, starts from the date on the application so it is usually retroactive!

Information centres are located over the entire federal territory, they can be easily found by searching for the keywords “Wohngeld” and “Beratungsstellen” online and they offer competent, detailed and individual information.

Small lesson on the profession of: hearing acoustics professionals

As our society is getting older, professions can be classified as very future-proof when they offer services for the elderly, for example hearing acoustics professionals. At the moment, there are no unemployed hearing acoustics professionals. Hearing impairments are on the rise, even with younger people, who need hearing aids. The profession is demanding: Acoustics professionals need competencies in electronics, anatomy, audiometry and psychology. Their skilled craftsmanship and technical know-how make hearing acoustics professionals very in demand specialists within the health sector. They work very closely with other specialists such as ear, nose and throat specialists.

Hearing acoustics is a crafts code recognized profession with three year long training. The practical part takes place in a hearing aids specialized company under the leadership of a hearing acoustics master craftsman. After the theoretical and practical basic education in the first year of training, the aim is to convey all the complex processes and competencies around caring for the hearing impaired. This includes for example the expert handling of the measuring and testing instruments to precisely determine the kind and extend of the hearing damage. The making of ear impressions is taught as well as the manufacturing of “otoplastics”, the ear pieces that have to be made individually for every hearing aid customer Then there is the fitting and the precise adjustment of the hearing aid according to the needs of the wearer.

All this theoretical know-how is taught in block courses at the vocational school for hearing acoustics in Lübeck. Courses take place three times a year for 4 until 5 weeks. The first exam is after half time. The course finishes with the apprentice examination.

Requirements: secondary school certificate, interpersonal skills, manual dexterity, technical interest.
