Career spotlight: cosmetics, make-up artist, tattoo artist

Dealing extensively with the body makes careers in cosmetics and make-up attractive for many dancers. Cosmetic educations have different directions: in addition to beauty, medical aspects can also play an important role. A cosmetician career can be learned as a school or dual education in two years. For certified schools, this can be financed by the Arbeitsagentur with an education voucher. Cosmeticians can be employed in cosmetic studios, wellness hotels or clubs, saunas or pools and by dermatologists.
The field of tattooing and piercing is also a “special cosmetic procedure”. There is a school in Berlin that is even certified by the Arbeitsagentur; it could potentially qualify for financial support.
If you want to remain closer to art and culture, then the make-up artist career seems logical. This can be learning by studying or in a three-year dual education (in the theater or a television station). We have no experience yet with the Arbeitsagentur actually covering the cost, but this should definitely be attempted and applied for.

The beautician lies between the careers of cosmeticians and theater make-up artists; doing make-up for various social occasions is the focus here. This career is not protected in Germany and can thus be learned in courses that take only a few months.

Changes on 1.1.2016: reform of housing subsidies

Finally an increase in housing subsidies will take place in 2016, as the Federal Ministry announced on 20.02.2015. Over seven years have passed since the last reform in 2009. The original intended increase for 2015 could not be implemented because of various disputes.

According to current statistics, approximately 870,000 housing subsidy recipients could profit from the reform, among them 90,000 recipients of basic welfare subsidies. In accordance with the current situation on the work and housing market, the height of housing subsidies are to be fitted to the development of income, rent and related costs. The subsidy level will be oriented towards the rent level in the future. In the process, the highest possible rent – the rent levels in cities and counties – will be increased by seven to 27 percent. The level of actual housing subsidies (table sums) could increase by an average of 39 percent.

Fundamentally, every low-income citizen has a legal right to housing subsidies. If he fulfills the legal requirements, he must be granted housing subsidies.
The housing subsidy law intends that three factors are determinant for calculating the subsidy:
1. income; 2. the number of family members; 3. rent level or costs.
The housing subsidy law has an upper limit defined by income. For a single household, the upper limit is at an absolute monthly income of 830 EUR. In households with more than one family member, the following upper limits apply in the case of the respective total monthly income:
1140 EUR for a two-person household, 1390 EUR for a three-person household and for four, 1830 EUR. If the monthly income is greater than these levels, then one does not have the right to receive housing subsidies.

A year in review: 2015

In the middle of November we offered counseling to the 700th dancer since Stiftung TANZ was founded. In total, 100 dancers addressed Stiftung TANZ for the first time in 2015; 196 were advised continuously. In the course of the year, 525 talks took place per telephone, e-mail, skype or eye to eye. Three transition workshops took place (Mannheim, Berlin, Düsseldorf), among them our new communications workshop. The project director held three lectures at companies or independent production venues (Bayerisches Staatsballett, Ballett Augsburg, Ballett Kiel), one at educational institutions (HZT Berlin); there were also two counseling days outside of our offices.

Stiftung TANZ was in present in public at the Berlin Foundation Week and at the Allianz Kulturforum with John Neumeier, both in April. The Stiftung was also represented by the chairman of the board, Sabrina Sadowska, at the Bühnenkonferenz in Bremen in November, and with its project director Heike Scharpff at the Congress of the Bundesverbands Freie Darstellende Künste in Hamburg in October. Internationally, we had a wide range of contacts: a meeting of the International Organisation for the Transition of Dancers (IOTPD) in Seoul; a round table in Bern on October 31st; a visit from a Japanese delegation in our head office in September; and a visit by us to the Instytut für Musyk i Tanza Warsaw in November – they are beginning a transition program financed by the Polish Cultural Ministry. We celebrated our 5th anniversary with our funders and supporters in January.

In addition, the Stiftung TANZ awarded 46 grants to dancers who were taking further education courses in 2015. This was possible because of numerous benefits in the year 2015 at, among others: Hamburg Ballett, Friedrichstadtpalast, Stuttgarter Ballett, Dance Company Nanine Linning / Theater Heidelberg, Gauthier Dance Company, Staatstheater Kassel, Tanzcompagnie Giessen, the Ballet of the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Bayerische Staatsballett. Thank you for your commitment and this great contribution!

Holidays at Stiftung TANZ

The Stiftung TANZ head office will be closed from 21.12.2015 to 10.01.2016. We are available for all questions related to dancers’ transitions beginning on January 11th 2016.

We wish you a happy Christmas and New Year!
