Newsletter April

Correction

Unfortunately, the first article of our newsletter 03/2016 contained a significant error. The article “Soiree “Deutschland tanzt“ – The Federal President honours dance” wrongly
started: “The following choreographies were presented to the selected audience; Christiane Theobald (former assistant intendant of the Berlin State Ballet) moderated the evening…”

We rectify, that Christiane Theobald is the current assistant intendant of the Berlin State Ballet and apologize for the mistake.

Unemployment insurance for freelance (ex)-dancers

The Federal Employment Agency offers freelancers a so-called ‘compulsory separate proposal insurance’ within unemployment insurance. Upon application, one can insure oneself voluntarily within the unemployment insurance if working freelance for a minimum of 15 hours a week. The application must made within three months of starting your freelance work. Application forms are available at any local unemployment agency (Agentur für Arbeit), requests are to be made in person providing a form of ID.
Two conditions have to be met, first: all applicants must have been in a working position with insurance contributions or have claimed unemployment benefit according to SGB III for at least 12 months of the last 24 months before application. Second: the request for insurance has to be made within the first three months after starting freelance work.

On the downside, the monthly contribution of €50 for the first 2 years of freelance work (after that it will be twice as much) is to be paid entirely by the applicant. On the plus side, when the freelance work ends or one becomes unemployed because of lack of freelance work the time you paid into this compulsory separate proposal insurance will count just like a permanent employment position liable to insurance deduction so you will be entitled to unemployment pay.

Parkinson-Dancing has professional potential of going

Within the last 10 years the number of dance clubs for Parkinson patients has grown considerably worldwide. Starting as a spontaneous trend from the USA it is becoming more and more professional – in Germany as well. It could become a new field of work for dancers who are especially interested in dance therapy and willing to undergo special training for Parkinson-Dancing.

At the moment health insurance companies are discussing adding Parkinson-Dancing to their catalogue as a refundable service. If they decide on this – and the scientifically proven positive effects of dance for Parkinson patients makes a strong case – interest in professional courses will surely rise even further. At the moment, all fees for training courses must be paid privately which is financially not an option for everyone. Nevertheless, the mid-term development for this very specialised form of therapy is promising and Parkinson-Dancing has potential as a future career choice for dancers interested in this specific field!

A very informative interview on this subject with the dancer Lena Klein recorded on 9th of September 2015 is here: bamsch.blogspot.de/201…
