Reducing a training schedule – targeted help for the body

At the end of a dance career, many things change – even in your body. When the usual training intensity is dropped, the body’s systems have to be slowly brought down to a rest modus. To do so, it’s important to slowly reduce training loads – otherwise problems can occur such as heart arrhythmia and circulatory issues, depression, hormone fluctuations and changes in your blood composition. Even symptoms of degenerative joint diseases often only appear after an intense period of dancing: muscle strength and coordination are reduced and so there is less joint protection from stabilizing muscles. Despite a lower training load, health problems increase. A conscious, step-wise reduction of a training schedule at the end of an active dance career can prevent many of these problems. It helps to replace dance training with other training methods step by step and to add endurance exercise.

Some tips for reducing training schedules after a dance career:
• Before your active dance career ends you should begin looking for movement alternatives. The large spectrum of possibilities can often help to make the departure from dance easier.
• After having danced, you can only benefit from your previous active life for a very short period. All measurable positive effects of dance on the cardiovascular system can already disappear after very few months. A new field of activity can prevent this.
• Endurance sports such as jogging, walking, cycling or swimming are ideal complements to step-wise reduction of a training regimen. You can determine the intensity and duration on your own. But be careful: it’s better to have a reduced load for a longer period than to do heavy training for a short period. It’s recommended to have a 45 – 60 minute session two or three times per week. If done correctly, endurance training is not only excellent for maintaining your cardiovascular system, it also supports keeping your weight at a constant level.
• The decision about how to exactly reduce a training schedule must be made individually. Counselling from a doctor who specializes in dance medicine is recommended. Generally, the following applies: the more gradually the load is reduced, the better it is for the body and psyche. (Dr. Linae Simmel)

Career information: standard dance teachers sought

The Allgemeine Deutsche Tanzlehrerverband – the professional organization for approximately 2,700 dance teachers in ADTV dance schools – is considering developing a short, two-year education program to qualify stage dancers to become ADTV dance teachers. It would be designed to be recognized by the Arbeitsagentur for support. Generally, the education program to become an ADTV dance teacher takes three years and includes a practical element in a licensed dance school as well as a comprehensive theoretical part. The career is very multi-faceted – it includes such things as a world dance program for couples and special dances for all age levels, from small children to senior citizens, as well as ballet instruction. The career is described on the dance teacher academy homepage:
adtv-akademie.de/

Dance teachers have excellent career opportunities; as a rule, all graduates immediately find a position after their final exams that they can potentially work at until a late age.

The ADTV suggests that a number of interested colleagues meet with the director of the ADTV dance teacher academy, Jürgen Ball, in order to exchange expectations and possibilities in a brainstorming. If you are interested, get in touch with us: info@stiftung-tanz.com
