Transition Basics Workshop Developing Visions / FRANKFURT M.
… for dancers with no ideas for their future careers yet, as well as those who would like to be reassured by sharing their ideas in a group.
Our workshop on coping with transition: Over 180 dancers have benefited from this workshop in the past 7 years. The workshop deals with the fundamental questions about transitioning: what will come after my dance career? How can I earn a living apart from dance? How can I develop an idea for my career? What skills do I have? What can I do with them, and what do I want to do? What can I do in the future that will stimulate and excite me in the same way as dance?
The workshop also offers necessary factual information for starting a new career. All stage dancers are welcome, whether freelance or with a long term contract in a theater. Themes: discovering your own skills and interests, developing visions for the future as well as concrete plans, learning from the experiences of others and creating a network. It is also possible to have an individual consultation at the end of the workshop.
Workshop directed by: Katrin Kolo; certified economist, dancer, choreographer and business consultant, founder of arts-in-business, cofounder of Transition-in-Dance in Munich &
Heike Scharpff; Project coordinator for Stiftung TANZ transition centre Germany, registered psychologist, theater director, drama and theater therapist.

tamed / Dance Medicine Germany e.V. is once again offering an academic and practical exchange on important themes at its 14th Congress for Dance Medicine. These include health support for dancers, dance educators, dance creators and dance athletes as well as health support through dance.
The aim of the conference is an interdisciplinary exchange between research, teaching, and practice.
Reports from the fields of clinical and practical dance medicine, medicinal research in dance, dance science, training techniques, physiology, nutrition, psychology, and education would all be welcome additions to the program!

Scholarships from the Academy of Cultural Education of NRW
The Academy for Cultural Education is now offering two scholarships for the research and development of problems in the area of dance education. The scholarship recipients will present their result from the 5th to the 9th of December 2018 in the Dance Education Lab at the Academy of Cultural Education in Remscheid.
The scholarship covers:

The Society for Dance Research will lead a symposium on the theme of “Dance-Diversity-Inclusion“ from the 27th to the 29th of October, 2017 at the TU Dortmund.
„Diversity and inclusion are central terms in current debates about education, academics, politics, and culture as they will measurably form future developments in society. The term diversity is used to describe living together in an increasingly complex society. […] For a long time, diversity has also played a role in dance, whether as an artistic theme, as an impulse for the creative process, in terms of methods for teaching dance, or in the context of dance therapy.“

Since 2003, the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences offers a supervised online degree in Social Work (B.A.), which can typically be completed within 8 semesters. The program works in cooperation with an established network of partner schools throughout the region: ASH Berlin, HS Fulda, FH Koblenz, HS München, FH Münster, HS Rhein-Main.
Throughout the degree there is a block seminar once a month on Friday and Saturday as well as introductory and accompanying events. The phases are arranged flexibly as blended learning modules and are thus particularly suitable for employees or parents with young children.

Psychological Aspects of Transition Part VII: Anxiety
Fear is a part of life. In appropriate amounts, it can help us to protect ourselves from dangerous situations. It is part of our primitive biological fight-or-flight reflex, which initiates physical changes: the heart accelerates, the body emits adrenaline, tension rises, breath becomes shallow, and complex thinking is no longer possible. When an anxiety-inducing situation has been effectively dealt with, the whole system can again relax (1).
This warning system developed itself long before the rise of the technological society and no longer functions in a way which is appropriate to the situation. Fears can multiply when people systematically block out anxiety-inducing situations (2). Then they can become irrational; they are, in other words, excessive to the requirements of the situation. For instance, this could happen when we project unpleasant situations into the future. Many of us are afraid of exams, of the dentist, or of managing certain bureaucratic procedures. Yet such negatively connoted situations become more uncomfortable and angst-ridden the longer we procrastinate. Finally we avoid such situations totally. This leads to a restricted life style. New fears are part of a fulfilling and interesting life. It is precisely the new, the unknown, and the not-as-yet-experienced which produce anxiety. This can be resolved when we confront anxiety-inducing situations and ‚master’ them. Dancers and other performing artists are well aware of this from stage fright (3).
Some degree of fear is therefore to be expected in every life-altering change, including the transition. This should not be irritating. Just as with stage-fright, this fear can be dealt with by confronting it; in other words, by approaching the problem, informing oneself, evaluating it und trying new solutions. Fear of transitioning usually only becomes a problem when dancers avoid the theme for too long. Then the fear evolves into a ‚‘fear of fear’, particularly if one does not speak with others about transitioning. As such, we encourage dancers to share their experience with others or with us.
The psychologist and therapist Dr. Rolf Merkle writes:“Changes do not create fear. We fear changes when we see them as a threat and perceive ourselves as weak and helpless; thus not trusting ourselves to deal with the new or the unknown.“(4) Some fear is part of the process; it is there to be overcome and even contains the possibility that we develop ourselves further. No-one should freak out! The psychotherapist Conni Strauss, director of one of the most innovative psychosomatic clinics (Bad Grönebach) even says:“We need to go where the fear is!“ (5). Those who confront their fears will develop. At least, those who want to experience the fullness of life.

Little Job Description: Bookbinder
This handwork has its roots in ancient days yet has managed to survive despite digitalization.
Bookbinders prepare individual and special orders by hand, as well as producing book covers, enhancing and repairing books, creating special packaging and picture frames (including valuable mounts) with the use of machines, depending on the commissions and the equipment at hand. “It takes at least three days to prepare a book. A week to ten days is standard,“ explains Paul Ebsen of the Employment Agency. This is perhaps that reason that each year, roughly 50 apprentices take up the apprenticeship nationwide, as the agency informs us.
The three year apprenticeship is dual, in other words, it consists of theoretical as well as practical aspects in the respective training enterprise. These are mostly small workshops. You can learn which workshops are offering apprenticeships by inquiring at your local book binder. The formal qualifications for the apprenticeship is a middle school diploma.
To find contentment working with this traditional craftsmanship, it takes:
– Interest in books
– Talent, enjoyment, and creativity in dealing with diverse materials
– visual/spatial intelligence and a love of detail
– solid knowledge of maths, especially materials science
– good posture and robust health, as most of the work is performed standing
– no allergies
„The Restauration of historical texts has acquired new significance. More emphasis is placed on the recovery of originals. An apprenticeship as a book binder can thus often serve as the basis for further qualifications as a restorer.“
